BMW is developing the Neue Klasse Gen6 eDrive EV technology, set to make its debut with the iX3. This electric vehicle will feature an 800-volt system, promising an impressive range of over 804 kilometers on a full charge. Additionally, it is expected to enable 30% faster charging for the battery pack. Notably, this technology will not only be exclusive to BMW; Mini and Rolls-Royce, both part of the same group, will also adopt this system, although it remains unclear which specific models will benefit from it.

While the iX3 will be the first to showcase the Gen6 eDrive EV technology, BMW plans to integrate it across its entire lineup in the future, including its M performance models.

At the heart of BMW’s Gen6 eDrive EV technology is an advanced 800-volt charging system. The battery packs utilize cylindrical cells rather than the traditional prismatic cells, boasting five times greater energy density. BMW asserts that this new technology will enable battery packs to charge 30% faster and provide an additional 30% range compared to current models, with some future models potentially exceeding these figures. All Gen6 EVs will also feature bi-directional charging capabilities.

The cylindrical cells are integrated directly into the battery pack, eliminating the need for separate modules. This innovative design makes the battery pack a structural element of the Neue Klasse vehicles, contributing to reduced weight and enhanced strength while maintaining a slim profile.

Furthermore, BMW has announced that all-wheel-drive xDrive electric models will be equipped with asynchronous motors on the front axle, as they are more compact and cost-effective compared to permanent synchronous motors.
