Instagram has quietly released a trio of social-first updates that shift the app from being a passive scroll space into a more dynamic, connected experience. First up: the Repost feature—think Instagram’s own version of a retweet or TikTok reshare. You can now reshare public Reels or posts to your followers’ feeds, with a dedicated Reposts tab on your profile to revisit what’s been reshared. It even credits the original creator and lets you add a personal note for context.

Next is the much-talked-about Instagram Map, nestled under your DMs. It’s opt-in, updating your location only when you open the app, and it shows where friends and creators have posted Stories, Reels, or Notes from tagged locations over the past 24 hours. You can share this with everyone, just Close Friends, specific people, or nobody at all—and parents can manage teen accounts too.

The third update: Instagram is rolling out a “Friends” tab in Reels, now globally available. This tab highlights Reels your friends have liked, commented on, reposted, or created, making it easier to engage around content your close circle is already watching. You also get privacy controls—like hiding your activity or muting others’.

While Instagram touts these as tools to spark creativity and social engagement, critics argue they’re derivative: reposts echo X/Twitter, the map mirrors Snapchat’s Snap Map, and the “Friends” tab is reminiscent of TikTok trends. Yet for creators and users alike, these updates offer fresh ways to discover, share, and stay connected.
