Robert Kiel, who served as the Chief Legal Officer at Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI, announced his resignation after slightly more than a year in the role. Kiel attributed his decision primarily to personal reasons, highlighting the need to devote more time to his young family. He also acknowledged differences in strategic vision with Musk as a contributing factor to his departure.
Since joining xAI in May 2024, Kiel played a critical role during a period of rapid expansion, including the company’s successful $6 billion Series B funding round and its strategic integration with the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). These milestones presented complex legal challenges, from regulatory compliance to intellectual property management, demanding robust legal oversight.
Following Kiel’s resignation, Lily Lim has been appointed as the new Chief Legal Officer. Lim brings a unique background that combines scientific rigor—having previously worked as a NASA planetary scientist involved in Venus mapping missions—with legal expertise, marking a strategic shift towards interdisciplinary leadership at xAI.
This change in xAI’s legal leadership occurs amid a wider pattern of executive turnover in Elon Musk’s portfolio of companies, reflecting ongoing efforts to stabilize leadership during phases of intense growth and innovation.
