A new service named Bounce, developed by the nonprofit “A New Social,” has launched to solve the long-standing problem of user migration between two of the most popular decentralized social networks, Bluesky and Mastodon. The platform’s goal is to give users more control over their online identity and data, shifting power away from centralized corporations. Bounce facilitates a one-way migration, allowing a user to move their account, followers, and the content they have posted from Bluesky’s AT Protocol to Mastodon’s ActivityPub network.

The service creates a “bridged” account that acts as an intermediary, effectively allowing a user’s original account to exist on both networks during the transition. The process, while not a true merger of the two protocols, is considered a significant step forward for the “Fediverse,” which is the collective name for federated networks like Mastodon, Pixelfed, and others. This development is seen as a crucial step toward a more open and interoperable social media landscape, where users are not locked into a single platform.
