5-Year iPhone Pattern Suggests the Big Display Change You’ve Been Waiting For Is Coming in 2027

A familiar five-year cycle in Apple’s iPhone design could bring one of the most anticipated changes yet — a completely uninterrupted display — in 2027. Back in 2017, Apple introduced the iPhone X with its iconic notch, reshaping smartphone design across the entire industry. That bold decision, while divisive, gave Apple space to include Face ID and other front-facing sensors. Fast forward five years to 2022, and the iPhone 14 Pro series replaced the notch with the Dynamic Island — a sleeker, more functional approach to managing notifications and multitasking. Now, if the five-year pattern holds true, the next major change will arrive with the iPhone 20 Pro and Pro Max in 2027.

According to leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple is preparing to introduce the first iPhone with a true under-display front camera that year. Before that, in 2026, the iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to move Face ID components beneath the screen while retaining a small punch-hole camera. Then, in 2027, Apple plans to take things even further by hiding both the Face ID system and the selfie camera entirely under the display. This would allow for the first-ever iPhone display with no cutouts at all — a design Apple has been chasing since the original iPhone’s concept in 2007.

Reports also suggest Apple will skip the “iPhone 19” name and jump straight to “iPhone 20” to celebrate two decades of iPhone history. The iPhone 20 Pro and 20 Pro Max are rumored to feature a futuristic design with no ports, no physical buttons, and no bezels — just a flawless slab of glass. Charging and data transfer will rely entirely on MagSafe and AirDrop, removing the need for traditional cables. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman earlier revealed that Apple has been developing this clean, portless aesthetic for years, inspired by the minimalist vision of Steve Jobs and Jony Ive.

The shift will likely require new accessories, as the MagSafe ecosystem becomes the standard for both power and connectivity. Though it may increase costs initially, the change represents Apple’s next big step toward a fully wireless, seamless future. If the cycle continues, the following major redesign could come in 2032 with the iPhone 25 lineup. Until then, the 2027 iPhone 20 Pro and Pro Max could mark the moment Apple finally delivers the perfect, edge-to-edge display it’s always imagined.
