Turkey moves to ban social media for children under 15

Turkey is moving toward one of its most restrictive digital regulations yet, as lawmakers approve a plan to ban social media access for children under the age of 15. The proposal, passed by the Turkish Parliament’s Human Rights Committee, aims to address growing concerns over digital addiction, cyberbullying, and privacy violations affecting minors in online environments. Under the proposed framework, social media platforms would be required to deny services to users aged 15 and below, while internet access for individuals under 18 could be restricted during specific hours. The initiative is part of Turkey’s broader Digital Strategy for 2026–2030, which emphasizes stricter identity verification, enhanced content moderation, and tighter controls over online gaming platforms to ensure child safety in the digital age.

Turkey’s Parliamentary Human Rights Committee has approved a proposal that would ban social media platforms from offering services to children under the age of 15. The plan is part of a broader initiative titled “Threats and Risks Facing Children in Digital Media.”

Under the proposal, internet access for individuals under 18 could be restricted during certain hours, while social media companies would be required to block access for users aged 15 and below.

The initiative also emphasizes stronger user identity verification, stricter content moderation, and measures to prevent the sharing of children’s personal images and data. Lawmakers say the goal is to combat digital addiction, cyberbullying, and privacy violations.

As part of Turkey’s 2026–2030 Digital Strategy, new regulations are also being prepared for online gaming platforms, including mandatory registration using national identity information and enhanced content oversight.

Turkey joins other countries such as Australia and Spain, which are also considering or implementing age-based restrictions on social media usage.
