Uber, in collaboration with autonomous vehicle technology company Momenta, is set to begin testing its self-driving taxis in Europe in early 2026, with the first trials scheduled for Munich, Germany. This partnership, which was first announced in May, aims to combine Uber’s expansive platform with Momenta’s advanced self-driving technology.
These autonomous vehicles, which will initially operate with human safety operators on board for monitoring and control, will run within pre-defined operational zones in Munich. Germany was chosen for its pioneering legal framework for autonomous driving, which allows for the operation of Level 4 vehicles on public roads.
This initiative is part of Uber’s broader strategy to partner with various autonomous vehicle companies globally, rather than developing the technology entirely in-house. The company is already working with other partners in the United States and the United Kingdom. Momenta, a Chinese firm, has a strong history of collaboration with major German automakers like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which has facilitated its entry into the European market. The trials in Munich could pave the way for a wider rollout of robotaxi services in other European cities.
