OpenAI has introduced a new graphical Codex application that transforms its previously command-line-focused coding assistant into a user-friendly interface accessible to a much broader audience. The app enables users to create programs, scripts, and automation workflows simply by issuing text or voice commands.
The system runs on the advanced GPT-5.2-Codex model, which can write code, execute terminal commands, run tests repeatedly, and refine outputs until the requested task is completed. One of the standout features is its ability to handle multiple instructions simultaneously, allowing users to automate complex workflows without manual intervention.
In addition to coding assistance, the application supports scheduled execution of tasks. Users can configure specific commands or scripts to run automatically at predefined intervals, making the tool suitable for automation, system maintenance, and repetitive development processes.
Currently, the Codex app is available only for macOS, though OpenAI has confirmed that versions for Windows and Linux are planned for future release. The company is also offering limited-time free access to Codex across CLI, web, and app platforms for free-tier and Go-plan users until March 1.
Meanwhile, Plus and Business subscribers have received expanded usage limits. These users can submit up to twice as many requests to Codex until April 2, giving them additional capacity for large-scale development tasks and experimentation.
The launch highlights OpenAI’s broader strategy to lower barriers to software development by combining advanced AI reasoning with intuitive interfaces. By removing the need for deep programming knowledge, the Codex app could significantly reshape how individuals and teams build digital products.
